The Swede saw his night cut short in the 31st minute after referee Bjorn Kuipers gave his a straight red for a challenge on Oscar. A number of critics saw the decision as harsh, including the man himself.

He told reporters: "I don't know if I have to get angry or start to laugh. For me when I saw the red card I was like 'the guy doesn't know what he's doing'.

CALLS IGNORED

Even Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho called on Uefa to overturn to decision and allow him to take part in PSG's next European game. However, Uefa have told The Mail that PSG will not be able to appeal the decision.

Uefa rules say a referee's decision is final and clubs can only appeal if they believe there is a case for misidentification. Ibrahimovic's red card will carry a minimum of a one-match ban and a committee will assemble in the near future to decide whether or not to extend the ban further.

Only if they decide to extend the ban can PSG appeal against the additional matches, but the first will remain in place regardless. That goes against Mourinho's wishes after he called on the ban to be lifted.

MOURINHO'S RICH WISH

Mourinho told reporters: "I spoke to him after the game and when he speaks with me he's always honest. He would tell me if it was a reason for a red card, and he was very disappointed so if that's the case, I hope they can minimise the mistake and let him play the quarter-final. If he did nothing wrong, he deserves that."

That may be a little rich from the Chelsea boss because the action of his own players may have contributed to getting Ibrahimovic sent off. Nine blue shirts surrounded the referee with only Oscar, who was busy writhing around on the floor, and Thibaut Courtois staying out of the mix.

It was clear intimidation tactics from John Terry and his Chelsea players and could have contributed to the referee's decision to show him a red card.
